TU Business students to work with deaf community

SUBANG JAYA - Taylor’s University (TU) business students will help run local cafe chain Deaf in Business (DIB) Coffees of Hawaii, according to DIB founder Dr Allen Teh.

DIB Coffees of Hawaii, fully operated by deaf personnel, is set to open its third outlet opposite LT1 on 1 Oct, Teh said.

“The students who are involved in the project cannot speak. They have to become deaf.

“I had to conduct a few classes to teach them sign language,” Teh said.

Teh added that the gourmet coffee kiosk, part of a venture between DIB and TU’s School of Business faculty, would provide students with real-world experience in social entrepreneurship.

Students will have to devise and execute marketing plans and aid the DIB staff in running the kiosk, Teh said.

“They have to get creative because they have a certain sales target to meet,” Teh said.

According to Teh, students are exempt from handling food and drinks unless they have acquired a medical jab for hygiene purposes.
