SUBANG JAYA - In conjunction with Industrial Training Interview Day, hospitality students were interviewed for internships by representatives from companies such as Shangri-La.

Prashana a/p Magendaran, 21, is currently pursuing a Bachelors in Culinary Arts & Food Service Management.

“This is my first internship, so I’m quite nervous,” she said while waiting to be interviewed by the Hilton Hotel Group.

“Hopefully, they’ll let me be a chef as I’d like to work in the hotel’s kitchen,” she added.

She hopes the hotel would pay her and that the internship will boost her chances of landing her a permanent job come graduation.

Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur director of learning & development William Lim was at the event on 10 Sept at Taylor’s Lakeside Grand Hall.

“Interns who have performed exceptionally during their time at Mandarin Oriental are often our first choice when vacancies open up,” he said.

“So when we are looking to hire, we refer to our performance records and approach interns who’ve impressed us, with a job offer,” he added.

He noted that during their internships, students would apply theories they’ve learned in class in a real-world setting which built up their confidence as they dealt with customers.

Once students have graduated, Holiday Inn Glenmarie assistant human resources manager Siti Noor Azwani Hassan offers them the prospect of joining I-Grad, an 18 month management trainee program.

“It’s our fast track program to permanent employment,” she said.

She added that participants will go through three phases which will equip them with the skills and experience to excel in the hotel industry.
