SUBANG JAYA – Over 300 Taylorians shared their thoughts on self-acceptance at various booths set up during Taylor’s annual Mental Wellness campaign held on 3 Sept.
Hosted by Taylor’s Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC), counsellor and person-in-charge Yap Ming Fai spoke about the campaign, which emphasised four themes, namely my dream, assertiveness, my feelings and my body.
“This campaign is one of the initiatives to reach out to students, to promote our services and also to encourage Taylorians to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Not only physically but mentally as well,” she said.
Yap sought to bring the movement of self-acceptance towards the students with this campaign as an approach and guaranteed that CPSC is ready to serve students in mental capacity.
“Accumulations of your burdens might lead to hormonal issues and a person will fall into depression, that is why acceptance of feelings is very important,” Yap said.
With the help of student volunteers who were trained on stress management and counselling, Yap mentioned that it is their priority to keep all information private and confidential.
“One of most frequent problems that students face would be relationship issues, followed by academic concerns, stress, grief, sexuality or gender issues or risk-taking behaviors, ” Yap added.
Yap also said that the CPSC is also looking into accommodating students with special needs by providing friendly services for them.
“During the campaign we handed out information regarding the CPSC giving support to students who have various disabilities such as hearing or eyesight problems and learning disabilities.”
Due to an increase of student population in the university, Yap said there has also been an increase in appointments made.
“During peak hours, there could be at least one or two walk-in students.”
Yap added, “We hope students will not self-diagnose but seek help whenever they can.”
CPSC is open from 8am – 6pm on weekdays, located at Block A level 2. For more information, email the centre at counsellors.lsc@taylors.edu.my.
