Joint Outreach Event

SUBANG JAYA – The School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and School of Biosciences of Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus (TULC) have co-operated to organize the Joint Outreach Event, which will be held on Saturday, 27 Sept 2014 from 9am to 2pm at Taman Putra Damai, which is near Citta Mall, Petaling Jaya.

 

This event is a joint health outreach in charged by three lecturers who are Dr Xavier Vincent from School of Medicine, Dr June Choon Wai Yee from School of Pharmacy, and Dr Roseline Yap Wai Kuan from School of Biosciences. According to Dr June, the purpose of the event is to empower the community through propagating better living for enhancing quality of life with emphasis on improving family well-being, health and civic consciousness among the urban poor community.

 

The students from School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and School of Biosciences will also be performing general health checks on blood pressure, body mass index and body composition screening, and blood glucose screening on participants during that day and suggest accordingly the necessary action to be taken after that.

 

Dr Roseline encourages students to join this event. “There is a total of 70 students from School of Biosciences will be participating in this event, majority are taking health-related modules and also students who are the members of the Biosciences Club,” she said.

 

She added that students would be able to learn beyond classroom setting from this event by applying the Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) such as Thinking and Problem Solving skills, Communication skills, Interpersonal skills, and Citizenship and Global Perspectives.

 

In addition, students from School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and School of Biosciences will be working together in various activities for this event. Hence, allows a strong integration of knowledge sharing, and working as a team.

 

Justin Wong Poh Meng, 20, the club president of Biosciences is in charge of the flyer distribution. Not only that, the posters for this event will be provided from the Ministry of Health.

 

Wong said that it’s a very good experience and opportunity to be a part of this event as it is a very eye opening experience for Taylor’s students. Not only they get to experience helping the poor and needy, they are also able to increase our knowledge of the urban poor community.

 

In the future, he hopes that they will be able to contribute more to the society.
