Student runs sports club solo
By Hanif Rabin
Amir Nuramin bin Muhammad Amin, Taylor's Sports Ambassador, Student, 23, used to be just another player in the rugby club.
He was relatively new to the sport, but put in a lot of effort in learning the game.
In his second year in the club he busted both knees due to an injury, sustaining torn anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL). This type of injury is a major liability to athletic people of any sport because it reduces the agility, flexibility and movement of the leg overall. He had surgeries done, and due to his inability to play, the management placed him under their wing, giving him the reigns to run the club the way he sees fit. As a result of having responsibility thrust upon him, he rose to the occasion and took his role seriously. In no time at all, he was given the presidential post of the team due to his diligence, organizational and planning skills.
He brought the rugby club from a relative unknown to one the best teams to play for a university. Players from places such as Royal Selangor Club (RSC) came to join as well. Under his management, a player was called up for the Malaysian Tryouts and is currently representing Selangor. He left the club after it was able to run on its own. Amir then took the Frisbee Club under his wing and they took third place in a tournament they participated in. Again, he left the post after making sure that it could continue without him.
"Having no support is really hard, and it's a challenge for me. I told myself I'll build the club, and one day when I recover, I want to play," Amir said. When he finally recovered from his injuries he was selected to join the rugby team in 2013, and sadly, was injured again.
His main goal in any sports club was in his own words, "To build the club so that I have a platform to play, to have fun with my friends, and I want my friends to have fun, and I don't want the people I hang out with to do other things like wasting their time on drugs and other unbeneficial activities."
Creating a student campus life experience is also another one of his main goals, in order to give the students things to do in terms of physical activities other than just studying non-stop. Amir's style of leadership involves team-building activities while maintaining discipline during training.
"Team bonding creates the right players. With the right management you will get players with the right mindset."
He handles everything all by himself during his tenure in all the different clubs he was in. His players respect his style of authority and what he created.
"I let them (the players) hang out after training, have discussions, watch movies together and even go on trips together. We take our practices very passionately, but at the end of the day I want them to have fun. I try to create an environment where they can enjoy themselves, as that is how you create loyal players."
