SUBANG JAYA – Spaces for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) were among those designed by Taylor’s University Interior Architecture degree students for their final showcase.

The display last month featured various designs for youth and communal spaces.

Student Jason Hiew, 23, designed a suicide prevention centre that provided shelter and counseling for those at risk of suicide, as well as information and training for volunteers.

“It took me some time to understand the emotional consideration for the spaces as they were designed for a sensitive purpose,” Hiew said.

Class representative Wong Han Yi, 22, said the students were encouraged by lecturers to propose designs that solved problems faced by local communities.

“There were some who designed LGBT spaces as well as community centres for youths and those with learning difficulties,” Wong said.

Following their exhibition at the CoDA gallery at the Commercial Block, Wong added that the graduating batch attended its accreditation on 11 Sept.

He said members of the Board of Architecture Malaysia were present to award the students their certificates.
